any of the 610,000 deaths due to heart failure could have been prevented if the disease had been diagnosed at an earlier stage. The pathology is complicated by the fact that many patients display non-specific symptoms such as shortness of breath that could have several possibly etiologies.

Early diagnosis in primary or urgent care can identify some cardiac risk parameter (hypertension, sudden weight gain, arrhythmia) but the gold standard for functional and structural diagnosis remains full transthoracic echocardiography which is too expensive to be indicated for patients with non-specific symptoms.
